The second fieldwork of the Tectonic project is currently taking place in Puerto Madryn, Argentina.
The interdisciplinary team composed by archaeologists, engineers and geologists from both Italian and Argentinian partners is working to document the Emma Shipwreck. The Emma schooner was built in 1883 and it was a 25 meters long ship with three masts. It was one of the vessels in Sir Shacklenton’s fleet, in the explorer’s first expedition to Antarctica, at the beginning of the 20th century.
The ship sank off the coast of the city of Puerto Madryn on January 20th, 1947. The documentation work has included a detailed photogrammetric survey of the seabed and the analysis of the materials and the degradation phenomena that are affecting the remains that mainly consist of one engine, the keel and the winch.
The preliminary results of this campaign will be presented to the public on March 1st at the Ecocentro Pampa Azul in Puerto Madryn by Fabio Bruno (Università della Calabria) and Dolores Elkin (CONICET – Instituto Nacional de Antropologia y Pensamiento Latinoamericano).
