Dr. Salvatore Medaglia’s research data at CONICET CENPAT headquarters

The research stay of Dr. Salvatore Medaglia (Department of Cultures, Education and Society, University of Calabria) in Puerto Madryn (Chubut, Patagonia) at the CONICET CENPAT headquarters (National Patagonian Center of the National Scientific and Technical Research Council) has concluded. He was received by CONICET researcher Dr. Guillermo Gutiérrez (IDEAus – CONICET), with whom he discussed and analyzed data related to the research being conducted by the TECTONIC project on the pilot site of the “Emma” schooner, built in 1883 and shipwrecked in the Nuevo Gulf of Puerto Madryn.

Inspections were also carried out on other shipwrecks, including the “Kaiser” steamship, the whaling ship “Bahía Galenses 2“, and the site of the “Folías” wreck (for more on these sites, see G. Gutiérrez, D. Elkin, “Guía ilustrada de naufragios y otros bienes patrimoniales marítimos históricos de Puerto Madryn“, Trelew 2021).

The two underwater archaeologists, specialists in 19th-century shipwrecks with previous collaboration on the steamship “Bengala“, which sank in 1889 in the waters of Capo Rizzuto, near Crotone in Italy, were able to exchange ideas and solutions to apply to underwater cultural heritage, with special reference to documentation, monitoring, and preventive conservation and protection strategies for sites located in intertidal zones, of which the Patagonian coast is particularly rich.
